The name of the herb comes from the Greek words "oros," meaning mountain, and "ganos," meaning joy. It typically grows around 50 cm tall and has purple leaves around 2 to 3 centimetres in length. The chemicals that give the herb its unique and pleasant smell are thymol, pinene, limonene, carvacrol, ocimene, and caryophyllene.

Oregano is a Mediterranean herb that is used for cooking and medicinal purposes, ranging from treating infections to repelling insects. Contains potent antioxidants and has anti-bacterial properties. One teaspoon of dried oregano contains some important nutrients as : calcium, iron, Vitamin K, etc.

Use it to flavour sauces, make herby bread rolls, and in marinades for meat. Greek Salad (Horiatiki) or Feta (Greek White PDO cheese) ''takes off'' with the addition of Oregano. Here are some more tips: 1) Add it toward the end of the cooking process for maximum flavour. 2) The smaller you chop or grind it, the more flavour will be released. 3) Start with a small amount, as too much can make the food bitter. 4) One teaspoon of dried oregano is equivalent to one tablespoon of fresh oregano..
